Fraudsters are no longer targeting just individual users. Businesses are now their favourite target — because the amounts are bigger and the mistakes are easier to make under pressure.

7 scamsYou need to know before your next transaction

The most important thing to know: UPI payments are instant and irreversible. Once money leaves your account, there is no "undo" button — not from your bank, not from the UPI app, not from anyone. Prevention is your only protection.

THE 7 SCAMS

Every UPI scam targeting businesses right now

1

The fake payment screenshot

How it works

A buyer sends you a screenshot of a "successful" UPI payment. You release goods or services. The money never actually arrives — the screenshot was edited in a photo app.

How to stay safe

Never release goods based on a screenshot. Always check your bank account or UPI app directly and wait for the actual credit notification before handing over anything.

2

The "collect request" trick

How it works

A fraudster sends you a UPI collect request saying "approve this to receive your payment." You approve it — but approving a collect request sends money OUT, not in.

How to stay safe

To receive money, you need to share only your UPI ID. You never need to approve, scan, or enter your PIN to receive a payment. If someone asks you to — it is a scam.

3

The overpayment refund scam

How it works

A "customer" pays you more than the invoice amount and asks you to refund the difference quickly. Their original payment later bounces or is reversed — leaving you out of both the goods and the refund you sent.

How to stay safe

Never refund a difference until the original payment has fully settled and cleared — which typically takes 1–2 business days to confirm with certainty.

4

The fake customer care call

How it works

Someone calls claiming to be from your bank or UPI app. They say your account has a problem and ask you to share your UPI PIN or OTP to "verify" your identity.

How to stay safe

No bank, UPI app, or payment company will ever ask for your PIN or OTP over a call. Hang up immediately and call your bank's official number yourself to verify.

5

The QR code swap

How it works

A fraudster physically sticks their own QR code over yours at your counter or shop. Customers scan it and pay the scammer — not you. You only notice at the end of the day when the money doesn't add up.

How to stay safe

Check your QR code every morning before opening. Keep it laminated and behind your counter if possible. Ask customers to confirm your business name on their screen before paying.

6

The impersonation order scam

How it works

Someone pretends to be a large company or government body placing a bulk order. They ask you to pay a small "registration" or "processing" fee via UPI to unlock the contract. There is no contract.

How to stay safe

Legitimate buyers never ask suppliers to pay a fee to receive an order. Verify any bulk inquiry by calling the company directly on their official number — not the one provided by the caller.

7

The SIM swap attack

How it works

Fraudsters convince your mobile carrier to transfer your phone number to their SIM. They then receive all your OTPs and take full control of your UPI apps and linked bank accounts.

How to stay safe

If your phone suddenly loses signal for no reason, call your carrier immediately. Set a SIM lock PIN with your provider. Use a separate phone number for business banking where possible.

Can you spot the scam?

A supplier calls and says: "We need you to scan this QR code and enter your PIN to verify your account before we release your payment." What do you do?
THE GOLDEN RULES

8 rules that will protect your business from UPI fraud

  • Never release goods before confirming the credit in your account. Screenshots lie. Bank notifications tell the truth.
  • You never need your PIN to receive money. If someone asks for it, they are stealing — not paying.
  • Treat urgency as a red flag. Scammers create pressure so you act before you think. Real buyers can wait two minutes for you to verify a payment.
  • Check your QR code every morning. A 10-second check before opening could save you an entire day's takings.
  • Never refund a difference before the original settles. Wait at least 24 hours and confirm the credit is genuinely cleared — not just "pending."
  • Set a daily UPI transaction limit. Most UPI apps and banks let you cap daily outgoing payments. Set it to your typical daily need — anything beyond that requires deliberate action.
  • Train every staff member who handles payments. Scammers often target the most junior person at the counter — not the owner. Your safety is only as strong as your least-informed employee.
  • Report fraud immediately. Call the National Cybercrime Helpline at 1930 within 24 hours. Early reporting significantly increases the chance of recovering funds.

If it has already happened: Call 1930 (National Cybercrime Helpline) immediately. File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in. Notify your bank within the hour. Time is the only thing that can help — the faster you act, the better the chance of recovery.
